"Ben of the Builders, you've been sentenced to Banishment for the attempted murder of Thomas, the Newbie. The Keepers have spoken, and their word ain't changin. And you ain't coming back. Ever."
— Alby

The Banishment is an official punishment decided by the Keepers. The Banishment is held in public where everyone could see, presumably to make the other Gladers realize what happens if you do something against the rules. Thomas wonders why would someone get the worst punishment of all while the Keepers were taking place on the Banishment Pole to punish Ben. It was clear from the expressions and conversations, there is no way someone can stop the Banishment, once it is decided. Gladers only find the collar of the banished Gladers, the next day of The Banishment at the doorstep of The Maze.

The Banishment on Ben

Ben goes completely insane after going through the Changing. Later Newt says no one has ever gone as bad as Ben before. When Thomas was in the Deadheads, Ben suddenly appears from the woods, acting like a complete psycho, wearing only shorts and accusing Thomas that he is the one who should be killed. Ben scares Thomas saying that they all should tear apart each other's gut out and then attempts to murder him with a knife. Alby sees it and stops him from hurting Thomas. Day after that the Keepers drag out Ben by force. The Keepers with a help of a large pole leave Ben outside the Glade, into The Maze. Ben's last screams cease when the walls close by. It is not specified in the book what exactly happens to the banished boys but most likely they get killed by the Grievers.

Number of Banishment(s)

Newt says there has been three Banishments, excluding the one on Ben, all nasty as the one Thomas has seen.

Overall four.
