Carl was a Builder and Cook whose name can be seen engraved on the Wall of the Glade in the The Maze Runner. His name was not crossed out at the time and therefore he was alive when Thomas arrived. His name remained untouched on the wall after the Griever Attack, implying he survived and stayed with Gally and the other Gladers in the Glade when the others made their escape. Like the other Gladers that were left behind by Gally, Carl was picked up by WCKD.

The Maze Runner[]
Carl was first seen looking at Thomas when he woke up in the Box. He assisted Jack in opened the gates to the Box, allowing Gally to drop down inside and pull Thomas out. Carl seemed to get along well with John, as he was usually seen standing next to or talking to him. He was later seen working as a Builder in the Glade. He was later seen partying with the other Gladers and watched Gally fight Thomas. He later helped banish Ben from the Glade into the Maze for being stung by a Griever and attempting to kill Thomas. In a deleted scene, he was seen cooking and serving Gladers along with Frypan and John, confirming his second job as a Cook. When Minho was carrying Alby, Carl, along with the other Gladers, yelled at him to hurry up. When Thomas ran into the Maze, Carl tried to grab him along with Newt and Gally, but was unsuccessful. When Thomas, Minho, and Alby returned from the Maze, Carl, along with John, were seen running up to them to see what's going on and congratulated them. When Teresa arrived and said Thomas' name, Carl, along with the other Gladers, looked up at him in confusion. During the Griever Attack, Carl was seen running to the doors holding a torch along with Winston, Zart, and two Unnamed Gladers. Carl witnessed the other doors open. He then witnessed the Grievers run into the Glade. Carl then hid and somehow survived the attack. He was later seen observing the aftermath of the attack. Carl stayed behind with Gally's group when Thomas' group left, although he looked like he wanted to join Thomas' group in escaping the maze. Carl, along with Gally's group, were later left behind by Gally, who also escaped. While Thomas' group were in the lab, Newt saw Carl and John check up on an unconscious Alec.
The Death Cure[]
Although the actor didn't appear in the film, the actor was credited for being in the film. This confirmed the character survived.

- Throughout Gally's speech, Carl moves locations over and over.
- Carl and Gally are the only Gladers who don't walk away when Thomas' group leaves.
- This could mean that they were the only ones who regretted staying.
- Carl's secondary job as a Cook was revealed in a deleted scene.
- When the Gladers are running up to the doors to investigate them, Carl is seen with Winston, Zart, and Unnamed Glader 19. The next scene, however, he is somehow already at the doors with Unnamed Glader 2.
- The characters name was confirmed on IMDB. The actor's real name is also Carl.
- He does not appear in the books.
- He could be named after Carl Linnaeus, a Botanist.
- Carl, along with Peter and an Unnamed Glader, are the only Builders in the Film who actually wanted to join Thomas in escaping the Maze.
