The Scorch Trials[]
The Cure is first seen in the The Scorch Trials, when the Gladers meet up with the Right Arm, Brenda contracts the Flare. Mary Cooper uses Thomas' blood to successfully save her from what seemed inevitable. Brenda is the only character known to have been cured, though it is implied that Thomas could have saved his close friend and fellow Glader, Newt, as well. However, Thomas is forced to accept the fact that Newt is becoming a Crank faster and faster. The only thing which remains unclear is whether the Cure will rid an infected person's body from the Flare permanently.
The Death Cure[]

In the The Death Cure, Teresa uses a small fragment of Thomas's blood and examines it under a microscope. She observes an enzyme from his blood snapping a dark-red vein with the virus in it in half and thus killing it. Ava Paige finds out about Teresa's discovery. Later, after Paige has died, Janson and Teresa create the Cure, which Teresa eventually gives to Thomas for him to use.
