"Thomas: How many more people is it gonna take? How many more kids do they have to round up, torture, kill, huh? When the hell does it stop?
Teresa: It stops when we find a cure.
Thomas: There IS no goddamn cure!

"It's not just slowing the virus down. It's destroying it."
— Teresa finds a cure

The Cure is the ultimate outcome of WICKED's goals. As the name suggests, it is what is hoped to be the actual treatment for the Flare virus.

The Death Cure

Teresa with the Cure in the Death Cure film

In The Death Cure, WICKED tries to cut out Thomas's brain as they believe that by studying its tissue, and how its physical makeup allowes it to resist the Flare virus's power, they would be rewarded with the cure. By the end of the books, no cure for the Flare is found yet.

Teresa's discovery: Thomas's blood (indicated by blue patterns) is destroying the Flare inside the dark-red veins.

In the film, however, Teresa uses a small fragment of Thomas's blood and examines it under a microscope. She observes the blood snapping a dark-red vein with the virus in it into a half and thus killing it. The dark-red vein snaps into a half. Ava Paige finds out about Teresa's discovery. Later, after Paige has died, Janson and Teresa create the Cure.

The Scorch Trials

However, the Cure is also found in the Scorch Trials film as well. When the Gladers meet up with the Right Arm, Brenda contracts the Flare. Mary Cooper uses Thomas' blood to successfully save her from what seemed inevitable. Brenda is the only character known to have been cured, though it is implied that Thomas could have saved his close friend and Glader, Newt, as well. However, Thomas is forced to confront the fact that Newt is becoming a Crank faster and faster. The next time he meets Newt in the Death Cure book, he answers his pleas of "putting him out of his misery" by shooting him in the head.

What remains not quite clear is whether the Cure will rid an infected person's body from the Flare permanently.
