Gloomy[]

Newt had been looking out for the new girl for about an hour now. She wasn't with the various groups of boys nor could he find her in the homestead. She wasn't in the gardens neither. He had even tried the Blood House and the pens around. Now there was only one place left, and he didn't exactly like to search at the Deadheads. On the other hand, if she wanted to be alone the small wood would be just the place of her choice. He himself liked the company of trees, of plants in general. She probably was not aware that the forest also contained the graveyard of the Glade. Nick and Alby had decided to keep informations low on Greenbeans. Newbies tended to freak out, and they did not need to know everything on day one. Now he found that there might be a major drawback to this decision. He sighed. Would be bloody hard to find her there.

In fact he would not have found her at all, had he not been absolutely stock still and very lucky to hear a small noise as of heavy breathing – the noise of someone trying not to cry. And it came from above. Newt scanned the trees around him. She was hard to locate, but finally he noticed a branch moving in an odd way. Quick as a cat he climbed the oak and settled on a branch nearly opposite the one she was sitting on.

“Hey, what's wrong?”

The girl only shook her head aggressively and pressed her lips together.

“You have been crying.”

She clenched her teeth and shook her head.

“It's been trying for all of us in the first time. You'll get used to it, believe me.”

“Go away.”

Newt watched her from the side, and shook his head. “Nah, won't do that now.”

“Just leave me alone.” It was not more than an urgent whisper, pressed through clenched teeth.

“Can't leave you now. See, you are in a gloomy mood, and this tree is high. It might be tempting to go the easy way.”

She closed her eyes and took a long, shivering breath.

“See? I know something about this kind of mood.”

“Why?”

“I've been through it, too. And I'm still here.”

“And? Is it worth the trouble?”

“Find it out. It's your life.”

She shrugged. “Doesn't mean much.”

Newt moved a bit to find a more comfortable position. “Anyway, I'll stay up here with you until you come down with me. Pity, there's a big bonfire set up. Party ought to start any minute.”

She shrugged. “Don't let me detain you.”

He sniffed. “Doesn't make much sense without you, what with you being the guest of honour.”

She snorted. The sound very nearly resembled a tiny laughter. “I am what?”

We always welcome the Greenies with a big fire. So, come on now!”
