The next day Kat skipped breakfast, but she turned up to work like nothing had happened. She didn't talk much, and only to the matter. Gally observed her for a while, and eventually he asked: “You alright?”
“Yeah”, was the mumbled answer. Kat not even looked up from her work.
“Kat, if he hurt you… or said something… Well, he won't do that again, that's all I can say.”
Now she looked up and into his face. “What? Gally, what have you done?”
Gally backed away from her angry stare. “Nothing”, he defended himself. “I only told him that he'd better leave you alone. If he knows what's good for him.”
She let out a frustrated breath. “Listen, Gally, I'm not your property, okay? I can deal with Newt all by myself, believe it or not.”

“So you're with Gally now.” That was all Newt said, flatly.
This was clearly not what she had expected. “You got a problem with that?”, she snapped, a bit on the snide side.
His whole face shut down. “No”, he retorted, acid in his voice.
She felt terrible. “Fine. If you have nothing else to tell me…” She turned around.
He made no attempt to hold her back as she stomped off.
He felt terrible. This was not what he had wanted to say to her. In the distance he could hear Gally's voice. “Hey, everything okay?”
Other voices barged in, but Gally drowned them all out easily. “Did he do something to you?”
He'd never done anything to anyone, and certainly not to Kat.
But then he heard her. “SHUT UP, EVERYBODY!”, she yelled. Then sh…Read more >

To everybody's surprise Gally and Kat got along astonishingly well after their first fights. She accepted his leadership while he acknowledged her prowess.
This did not mean nice and peaceful, though. But the Gladers got used to a blazing row every now and then, the two hot-heads of the Glade yelling at each other, hissing and snarling like fighting tigers. But underneath a deep friendship grew, almost unnoticed. It rooted in mutual respect, familiarisation and trust.
Kat found that – dislike or not – Gally would never let anyone of his squad come to harm. He had an eye on everyone.
And Gally noticed that Kat did the same. She wasn't someone to be ordered around. A heated fight followed every time he tried that. But she wa…Read more >

After two weeks Kat's probation time was over, and now she stood in the centre of a semi-circle of Keepers. This Gathering would decide her future. What would she be from now on? Cook? Bagger? Most of the Keepers had shook their heads, and Kat hat easily agreed.
“So, what now?”, Nick demanded.
“She's good enough as a Med-Jack”, Clint volunteered.
“Good enough she's also in the Gardens.” That was Zart.
Now Nick turned to Gally, who had not yet uttered an opinion. “What about you? You usually have no problems to make your point.”
Gally straightened. “She's a skilled Builder.”
Everyone seemed relieved, but Gally was not yet ready. “But I don't wanna work with her.”
Kat had listened with growing impatience, and now she couldn't h…Read more >

“What's going on between you and the girl?”
Newt shot his friend a sharp glance, then looked to the other side. “What does it look like?”
“Looks like I ought to ask you as a friend what's going on. There are rumours.”
The blond boy shrugged. “I only show her in, that's all.”
“What?”, Newt asked, a good deal louder than necessary.
“Oh, you've never taken so much time to show someone in.”
“She does not easily accept things. And she's bloody uncomfortable in the company of some shanks.”
“But not in yours.”
Newt tried his very best not to blush, and nearly succeeded. “I just do my bloody best to help her settle in. What's wrong with that, I'd like to know?”Read more >
